Frederic Spence Tatham was only aged 15 when he began his career in May 1880 in the position of office boy with Mr Albert Button, a lawyer.

Following his admission as an attorney in 1886, he took charge of Baker & Laughton’s Ladysmith branch, with Herbert William Wilkes as a clerk. Tatham practised in partnership with George Robinson as Tatham & Robinson before that firm merged with FA Laughton until 1894.

Wilkes was admitted as an attorney in 1892 and was employed as the Under Manager at the firm FS Tatham, where he soon became a partner. Subsequent to Tatham being admitted as an advocate, the firm became known as Tatham Wilkes & Co in February 1912. In 1953, Errol Inglis Tatham, the father of the firm’s current managing director Nigel Tatham, was admitted as an attorney and later became a partner.

The firm moved from Fedlife House into its current premises, 200 Hoosen Haffejee Street, in 1997.
